Preface:

It is really gratifying for an author of a book to find it running through many editions. It indicates that the book proved to be satisfying the needs of the students ( and, as they say, also of the teachers) in the institutions of medical learning.

The book is, in its present form, a new edition and not merely a reprint. The purpose of this new edition remains the same as those of the previous editions.

On request from the readers of the previous edition of the book, two more new chapters are included in this edition: (1) the chapter on soft tissue sarcoma, and (2) the chapter on intestinal stomas. The chapter on intestinal stoma, in particular, is included in this edition after the request made by the students of surgery at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and Hospital, Mumbai, whom the author met during his visit to the same institution while attending a surgical workshop there. Hope this will help the students in their orientation and approach as and when they encounter such cases.

The author remains indebted to those surgeons and teachers in medical colleges who most kindly provided him with new clinical photographs for this new edition.

The author again gratefully acknowledges his profound debt to every member of their joint family for their inspiration.

He is also grateful to Mr. S. K. Jain of CBS Publishers and Distributors Pvt. Ltd. New Delhi for his keen interest in publishing this new edition. He is also thankful to Mr.Vinod Jain and Mr. Dharmvir of the CBS Publishers and Distributors Pvt. Ltd. For their painstaking help to give the book its present shape.

The entire text has been thoroughly revised and updated. The author takes responsibility for any shortcomings in this piece of work. As before, he welcomes constructive criticism and suggestions from the readers of the book. He also expects from his fraternity more clinical photographs highlighting the features of, and clarifying the reasons for, the diagnosis of particular cases and their treatment for their publication in the future edition of the book.
